The gypsy moth, which is now a permanent resident was introduced from France and accidentally released into Medford Massachusetts, has been an invasive pest for over 120 years. The gypsy moth caterpillar has a huge appetite and feeds on over 500 different types of trees and shrubs. They prefer feasting on the leaves of oak trees, multiplying quickly from just a few hundred caterpillars.

Gypsy moth caterpillars will emerge from their eggs in early spring time through mid May. They then spread like wild fire among the leaves, eating everyone of them in sight. This feeding will continue until June or July when the caterpillars them emerge as gypsy moths.
