Though the weather may be getting cooler and it feels like summer is over, mosquito season is not over. In Massachusetts this year there has been an increase in the number of cases of West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Until the first hard frost we need to be sure we are safe.
Amesbury EEE Case
On September 22nd Charlene Manseau of Amesbury died of EEE. This is the second death in Massachusetts this summer from EEE. The previous case was of Benjamin Duce from Westborough, who died in August. A total of seven human cases of EEE have been reported in the state this year according to White Coat Notes.
Because of this latest case of EEE the threat level has been raised to high in Scituate and critical in Marshfield. Communities across the state are canceling any outdoor activities that take place in the evening. The mosquitoes are most active from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
Early last week when health officials heard of another possible case of EEE they ordered an immediate spray of the city. The mayor of Amesbury has issued a ban on all outdoor activities from 5:00pm to 9:00pm on city property.
West Nile Reports
This year in Massachusetts there have been 19 cases of human infection from West Nile Virus. One person has died. This figure has tripled from the six cases of West Nile reported last year. Currently the entire state of Massachusetts is listed at moderate risk for EEE or West Nile.
