A Few Smart Changes You Can Make Today

Many people want to do their part to protect the environment, but there is so much confusing information out there. It seems too difficult before they have even begun! If you are one of these people, and you have children and / or pets and would like to “go green” with your outdoor living spaces, you can start with some simple steps to get you on the right track. The Veron Company is committed to environmentally friendly products and landscaping methods that can help you to achieve your goals. But read on to learn a few things you can do on your own.

Eliminate the chemical fertilizer. When you buy fertilizer in stores, you will find brands with harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment. Did you know that approximately 60% of nitrogen from fertilizer runs off and ends up mixing with ground or surface water? Instead, try all-natural manure and other organic fertilizers that mix well with the natural surroundings.

Choose natural pesticides. Chemical pesticides are responsible for killing approximately 70 million birds every year in the U.S. Also, if you use harsh chemicals on your lawn, it can be dangerous to your children and your pets. Try using some natural pest-control products such as hot pepper wax. The goal is to repel insects without harming the plants and trees in your yard. Hot pepper wax isn’t absorbed by plants. There’s an insecticidal soap that’s made mostly of potassium salts with fatty acids derived from plants, and is biodegradable. At the same time, it won’t harm beneficial insects. Some other natural solutions include peppermint, vinegar, lemon, orange peel extract and garlic spray.

Use Less Water. Organic lawns do not need as much water, which saves you time and effort. But why would an organic lawn need less water? When your soil is rich with organic material, it becomes like a sponge. So when you water your lawn, it absorbs it longer and doesn’t require frequent watering the way non-organic lawns do. In fact, it will even maintain its dark green, lush color during times of stress, whether it’s an extreme weather event or extra wear and tear. This will give you the curb appeal you’ve always wanted!

Pay Attention to What You Plant.  Make sure that the plants and grasses you choose will thrive in the part of the country where you live. Do they do well with a lot of rainfall? Or very dry conditions? Do they require more shade or sunlight? If you plant “smart,” you’ll lessen the need for more fertilizers and pesticides and all of the things that harm your lawn in the first place. When you pick plants that go well with their surroundings, you can let nature take over, and you’ll find the results are far better than when you use artificial, potentially harmful, products.
