With fall around the corner, it’s time to think of fresh starts and new beginnings. That means it’s time to tackle those projects you’ve been putting off. For many of us, we simply have too much stuff. We don’t have—or make—the time to organize it or get rid of those things we don’t need. As a new season approaches, it’s the perfect opportunity to take stock of what you want to keep and what you want to throw away. But how do you do that?

Take It By Category.

You could do a sketch of the major areas of your home that you’d like to de-clutter. Go room by room. Extra clothes in the bedroom closets? Tired furniture you’d like to replace in the living room? Broken appliances in the kitchen? Old summer swimming accessories in the garage? Make a list for each area. Then move outside. Did you get a new grill without throwing away the old one? Do you have an assortment of broken patio chairs or other things that are making your backyard unsightly?

Write down the things you’d like to get rid of. Tackle one area at a time, so it won’t be too overwhelming.

Identify Sources of Clutter.

Sometimes when we try to decide what to throw away, we’re so used to cluttered areas that we don’t even notice them after a while. What about paperwork? After you’ve done your taxes, do you have files and old papers everywhere? Sort through them and put any papers you think you should keep into clearly marked files that go in a filing cabinet. Get them out of major living areas. This also means the dreaded. . .facing down that junk drawer! You can do it!

Get Real about Your Goals.

You should expect de-cluttering to take some time. You may need to set aside a few weekends to really clean things out. Storing summer clothes as the weather starts to cool down can be time consuming as well. It’s best to put the old season’s clothes into storage bins and pack away to make room in drawers and closets for the clothes of the new season. It makes your bedroom feel lighter, too.

Tackle Big Items.

When it comes to getting rid of clutter, many of us procrastinate. Why? Because cleaning things out is about making decisions. Every left item is a decision you don’t want to make. The same can be said of your email inbox. (You know who you are, those who have over 500 emails you can’t bring yourself to delete.) Making decisions about big-ticket items can be especially daunting. So you’ll want to sit down with yourself and/or your partner and go over what things you really need to throw away and what things you should keep. If you have a family heirloom dresser that needs to be refinished, refinish it. Make it seem brand new. But if you have a broken desk that will never see its heyday again, consider chucking it. Don’t be afraid to say goodbye to the big things. At The Veron Company, we offer dumpster rental services that can accommodate even very large items that need to go. We’ll work with you depending on what you’re trying to throw out.
