July is a perfect month to identify your garden’s needs when it comes to your irrigation system. Here are a few tips to follow to make sure you are not only providing quality care to your lawn, but also supplying the right amount of water during the process.

Inspect Your Hoses

This is the simplest of tips. Be sure to check your water hoses at every connection for leaks or poor water pressure. Should you find any drips or if you feel that the pressure is not what it should be, repair or replace the hose as needed.

Install a Timer on Sprinklers or Automatic Irrigation Systems

Being able to control when your sprinkler system begins will help you keep a close eye on your water consumption over a month’s time. If you can find one that has a rainfall detector, believe it or not they have the capability of detecting oncoming storms; this will prove to be very useful in conserving water as well as not overwatering your lawn.

Overwatering can make your lawn more susceptible to disease and can stunt root growth. You can spot overwatering by looking at signs of fungus or mushrooms growing in your lawn.

Install a Rain Barrel

By adding a rain barrel, you are allowing the runoff from your roof and gutters to flow directly into a storage barrel that you can use to water other areas. Make sure that you purchase or build one with a cover, so that no one or no-thing can get in there. Remember that standing water is the perfect breeding place for mosquitos. The use of a rain barrel will not only allow you to water your lawn and garden using rain water, you will also be cutting back on your water consumption, which ultimately will help out your wallet.
