As summer turns into fall one of the things that people are looking forward to is the end of mosquito season. Dusk is a great time to have dinner outside with family and friends, however when unwanted guests are dining all the enjoyment is lost. You don’t want to be the meal for any mosquito much less an infected mosquito. The EEE virus has hit Massachusetts, don’t let it hit you!
Eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE, infected mosquitoes have been found in Carver and Kingston. Though these areas pose the highest threat to Mass residents, no town is 100% safe. Can a mosquito really hurt you? Yes.
Eastern equine encephalitis is a serious viral disease. The pattern is that a mosquito feeds on an infected bird and then a horse or person. When you get bitten you have about four to ten days before the case can turn severe. Symptoms are high fever, headache, chills and vomiting. Progression of EEE is a seizure, disorientation, encephalitis and coma. A third of the people who develop EEE will die. Those folks that survive often have mild to severe brain damage due to the swelling of the brain caused by encephalitis.
Bugs Killing People: Though this sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel it is a possibility.
There are several things that you can do to prevent EEE and mosquito bites:
- Repair any screen doors or windows
- Empty standing water
- Empty children’s pools and place them on their side so they do not hold water
- Wear bug spray
- Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves during dusk and dawn when it is peak mosquito time
- Net a baby playpen or carriage when outside
- Avoid camping where there are standing ponds or swamps
Utilize the power of Organic mosquito control
The benefits of organic anti-tick flea and mosquito control are numerous. It is possible to control pests with non-toxic solutions of all types. With organic methods:
- Minimum Risk Pesticide, EPA Classified
- Immediate insect control
- Safe for all beneficial Insects like Bees and Lady bugs
- Safe For Children and Pets
Keeping your family safe should be a high priority. Keep children inside during peak mosquito hours. If you’re out around dusk be sure to apply an extra layer of water repellant bug spray that contains DEET.
A Neighborhood Effort: Gather the neighbors together and fight against the blood sucking infectious insects. Scour the neighborhood and be sure there are no areas of standing water. Curtail neighborhood activities that happen around dusk. This may mean rescheduling some soccer games but you don’t want EEE to be the visiting team.
If it were “Twilight:” There are no mosquitoes as cute as Robert Pattinson and even if there were you would not want him to suck your blood. Teach your teens that when it is twilight they should come in for fear of a feeding frenzy by vampire bugs. This may sound funny, but it may stick with them and help prevent a case of EEE.
Peak mosquito season is over when the first frost hits. Around the end of September we should be able to enjoy “Twilight” instead of being afraid of it. This summer be sure to protect yourself and your family from EEE and West Nile by keeping up a strong mosquito defense.
