Water consumption and conservation is a truly important consideration, especially during dry periods that have been more prevalent in recent years. Here are a few tips on how you can save water in your garden.
Use Rain Barrels
A rain barrel is a great tool that allows one to collect rain water from rooftops and gutters. The best thing about this is that you will be able to water your lawn or garden, without tapping into your town’s water line, which in turn, lessens that financial strain that you might see.
Mulch
Not only does mulch provide a great look to your flower beds, as well as reducing weeds, but it also helps to retain moisture. Once you water your flower beds, you are allowing the water to sit within the mulch, promoting plant growth along the way.
Water at Opportune Times
The best times to water are before 8AM and after 4PM. These are the perfect times to reduce evaporation allowing more water to reach the plant’s roots. Especially during a warm day, watering flowers at noon might be a less than optimal endeavor as the air could be too warm to allow the moisture to really sink into the soil.
Water near the Base
When watering your plants, be sure not to just give them a brief shower to wet the petals or flowers. Be sure to water near the base of the plant so that the moisture can sink into the root system, allowing for a better, and quicker, growth period.
